Equity returns are not guaranteed. A fund can fall in value, and can stay below what you put in for years. The return used here is an assumption, not a forecast; try lower ones to see how the answer changes.
How equity gains are taxed
- Held 12 months or less: short-term, taxed at 20% of the gain.
- Held longer: long-term, taxed at 12.5% of the gains above ₹1,25,000 in a year.
- Plus 4% cess on the tax. PPF interest is tax-free; FD and RD interest is taxed every year at your slab rate.
- The amounts above already have this tax taken off.
Returns compound yearly: 12% a year is 12% a year, about 0.95% a month. Calculators that use 1% a month show slightly more.

How this works
Each monthly instalment is a separate purchase that grows for the months it is held. If you sell everything at the end, instalments from the last 12 months are taxed as short-term gains and the rest as long-term gains above the yearly exemption. What you keep is the value less that tax, also shown in today's rupees.

Questions
Why is this lower than other SIP calculators?
Two reasons. We show what you keep after capital-gains tax, and we compound returns yearly, so 12% a year means 12% a year. Calculators that apply 1% a month end up a little higher, and most show the value before tax.
How is a SIP taxed when I sell?
Each instalment counts separately. Units held 12 months or less are short-term and taxed at 20%; the rest are long-term, with the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains in a year tax-free and the rest taxed at 12.5%. Add 4% cess.
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP that rises each year, for example by 10%, usually in step with your salary. Enter the yearly rise under "Filled in for you" to see the difference.
